Savings account vs fixed-term deposit: which is better for you?

The choice between a high-yield savings account and a fixed-term deposit mainly depends on when you'll need access to your money and whether you prefer rate certainty or access flexibility. Both are safe products with deposit guarantees, but they have very different risk profiles.

Key differences

The fundamental difference is liquidity versus yield. A savings account lets you withdraw at any time, but the rate can drop if ECB rates fall. A fixed-term deposit guarantees the agreed rate for the full period, but penalises early withdrawal.

When to choose a savings account

  • You need immediate access to your money at any time.
  • It's your emergency fund that must always be available.
  • You believe rates will rise and want to benefit from that.
  • The amount is under €10,000–20,000 and the rate difference doesn't justify locking up the funds.

When to choose a fixed-term deposit

  • You have a specific amount you won't need for at least 6–12 months.
  • You believe rates will fall and want to lock in today's return.
  • The rate difference between the deposit and savings account exceeds 0.50 percentage points.
  • You want predictable financial planning: you know exactly what you'll earn at maturity.

Rate comparison (March 2026)

The best savings accounts in Spain currently offer between 2.00% and 3.50% (XTB at 3.50% with conditions). The best 12-month deposits range from 2.00% to 3.00%. In this environment, digital broker savings accounts are competitive with deposits — without the lock-up. See our full European deposit comparison.

Combined strategy: deposit ladder

A common strategy is to combine both products: keep 3–6 months of expenses in a savings account (liquid emergency fund) and distribute the surplus across deposits with staggered maturities (3, 6, 9, and 12 months). This maximises returns without sacrificing liquidity on all your savings.

Tax treatment: identical

Interest from both savings accounts and fixed-term deposits is taxed as capital income in the savings tax base (19% up to €6,000, 21% from €6,000–50,000, 23–28% above that in Spain). The withholding rate at source is 19% for both.

Frequently asked questions
Which pays more: a savings account or a fixed deposit?
In 2026, fixed-term deposits generally offer slightly higher yields (2.3%–2.8% APY at 12 months) versus savings accounts (1.9%–2.5% APY). However, some conditional accounts (requiring payroll, bills) exceed deposits — reaching 5% APY in the first year on limited amounts.
Can I withdraw money early from a fixed deposit?
It depends on the bank. Most fixed deposits allow early cancellation with a penalty (partial or full loss of interest). Some deposits — such as those on Raisin — do not allow early withdrawal at all. Always confirm the redemption terms before signing up.
Are savings accounts and deposits taxed the same way?
Yes. Both are taxed as capital income (savings base): 19% up to €6,000, 21% between €6,000–€50,000. Banks withhold 19% automatically at source. The only difference is timing: savings accounts typically pay interest monthly, deposits at maturity.
Do they carry the same guarantee?
Yes, if both are at an authorised bank in Spain or the EU. The Deposit Guarantee Fund (DGS) covers up to €100,000 per holder per institution, for both savings accounts and fixed-term deposits.
